Low-density lipoprotein (LDL) consists of a protein shell, containing apolipoprotein B-100 as well as other ancillary proteins, and a hydrophobic core consisting of cholesterol and triglycerides surrounded by phospholipids and cholesterol esters. LDL is taken up by cells, such as hepatocytes, macrophages, and endothelial cells, by LDL receptor-mediated endocytosis. Clinically, high levels of LDL has been associated with health problems, such as cardiovascular disease. This is due to the ability of macrophages to uptake cholesterol from LDL, leading to inflammation and thickening of the arterial wall. Current cardiovascular disease therapies include decreasing LDL by treatment with statins, which decrease cholesterol. BioVision’s LDL Uptake Assay Kit contains a fluorescently-labeled LDL that can be measured when taken up by cells. Unlabeled-LDL is included in the kit for assay validation.
