Diacylglycerol acyltransferase is also known as DGAT1 is a microsomal enzyme. It is involved in the synthesis of fatty acids into triglycerides. DGAT utilizes diacylglycerol (DAG) and fatty acyl CoA as substrates to synthesize triacylglycerol. DGAT plays an important role in the metabolism of cellular diacylglycerol and is essential in the physiologic processes of higher eukaryotes that includes triacylglycerol metabolism such as intestinal fat absorption, lipoprotein assembly, adipose tissue formation, and lactation.
