Fatty Acid-binding Proteins (FABP) are a family of homologous 14-15 kDa cytoplasmic proteins that are expressed in highly tissue-specific manner and play an integral role in the balance between lipid and carbohydrate metabolism. FABPs have been reported to be involved in the uptake and metabolism of fatty acids, maintenance of cellular membrane fatty acids levels, intracellular trafficking, modulation of specific enzymes of lipid metabolic pathways, as well as in the modulation of cell growth and differentiation.
